Phenalkamine-curing agents are synthesized from cardanol reacted with formaldehyde and alkylamines via the Mannich reaction. The fast and low-temperature cure properties of phenalkamines have a number of benefits for coating formulations.
The aromatic backbone of phenalkamine is responsible for the rigidity of the epoxy resin network and chemical resistance whereas the aliphatic side chain gives it flexibility, low viscosity, long pot life, corrosion protection, and water resistance when used as a hardener for curing the epoxy resin. Application productivity can be significantly improved and the ability to apply a coating in low temperatures allows for a longer or even year-round painting season.
